Our partners Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) recently reported on a case. Mid Vermont Christian School faced a significant challenge in 2023 when the state of Vermont banned all of its students from participating in state-sponsored sports. The punishment came after the girls’ basketball team chose to forfeit a playoff game rather than compete against a team with a male athlete, an action rooted in their religious convictions.
Two years later, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit sided with the school, ruling that the Vermont athletics association’s punishment was “unprecedented, overbroad, and procedurally irregular” and demonstrated hostility toward the school’s religious beliefs. The court restored the school’s right to participate in athletics while the case continues. This decision is a crucial win, signaling that government bodies cannot punish religious institutions for their beliefs. It serves as an encouragement for ministries to stand firm in their convictions and underscores the value of organizations like the ADF Church & Ministry Alliance in defending religious freedom.
