Project Description

Melissa Rego is a proud Cuban American and a native to Miami.  Being raised by exiled Cuban immigrants, education always came first.  She graduated from Miami Senior High School in the top five percent of her class receiving a fully paid scholarship to study at Miami Dade College.  Upon completion she transferred to the University of Miami, receiving her bachelor’s degree in Health Science.  Wanting to serve her community and having the opportunity to be mentored by so many amazing teachers, she wanted to help children in the same way.  She applied to Miami Dade County Public Schools and taught Health, Biology, Earth and Space Science and Algebra.  After teaching for a period of five years she was accepted to Nova Southeastern University, where she received her Masters in Educational Leadership.

During her interesting career in the education field, she was named Rookie Teacher of the Year (2001) by the faculty of William H. Turner Technical Arts High School.   In 2008, she was recognized by Univision/NOVA Southeastern University/Papa John’s  “Un Maestro Especial,” as their teacher of the year.  Recruited to progressively challenging positions, for several years she served as Lead Teacher, Volunteer Coordinator and the Activities Director at Somerset Academy Charter School in Pembroke Pines, Florida.  Although she started her career with Miami Dade County Public Schools, she was employed by an Academica managed charter school for five years, and is currently serving as the school principal for La Progresiva Presbyterian School, in which she has gained a vast amount of experience in that role.  Furthermore, she serves in the capacity of  Secretary for the League of Christian Schools (LCS).

She has had diverse opportunities to manage and oversee many facets of a Pre-K through 12-grade program and its activities.  Also, she has had the opportunity to begin something new; working in both the public and private sectors has enabled her to create and blaze a trail, implementing new programs to empower students of all ages, providing for them further opportunities for success.  Every event is a landmark and she is proud to say and be able to recognize that she has developed programs and events unique to these schools in which she has served.  She has mentored many students throughout the past twenty years and has contributed countless hours and ideas to the overall development of every organization she has had the privilege to serve in.

Though she is proud of the work she accomplishes in the educational realm, her family is of tremendous value to Melissa. The titles in which she cherishes the most are wife and mother. She is honored to be wife to Fernando, and the mother of their two beautiful daughters, Mia and Sophia.

Furthermore, Melissa is passionate about God, Christian education, and her community, she believes in empowering and raising up a generation that loves God, serves their city and lives out their purpose.
