Dual enrollment programs are expanding. The most recent data available from the National Center on Education Statistics show that 82 percent of high schools had students enrolling in dual enrollment coursework in 2010-11.

Dual enrollment programs are collaborative efforts between high schools and colleges whereby high school students enroll in college courses. Credits earned in these courses qualify as credit toward high school graduation as well as college credit, allowing for “dual credit,” which is where the term “dual enrolled” originates.

A recent report from Miami illustrates the popularity of such programs. The article elaborates on the partnership between Florida International University (FIU) and Miami-Dade public schools to offer more college-credit courses to its students.

But why would Miami-based FIU invest $17 million dollars in a local public school district?

Dr. Saif Ishoof, FIU Vice President of Engagement notes:

“Many of the students end up enrolling at FIU, and arrive on campus ready to hit the ground running.”

Is your school offering dual enrollment programs? Do your students go on to attend that college?
